PlayStation 5 Showcase: September 2020 Recap

Yesterday, PlayStation had their final showcase before the release of the PlayStation 5. The showcase featured games from a number of studios including Square Enix, Capcom, and Raven Software.

PlayStation 5

Release Date: November 12

Prices: $499/$399

Sony has finally released the PlayStation 5’s release date as well as the prices. We will be seeing PlayStation’s next gen’s capabilities on November 12 for the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. The rest of the world will have access on November 19. The full PlayStation 5, the one with the disk drive, will be priced at $499 while the digital-only PlayStation will be $399.

Final Fantasy XVI

Release Date: Unknown

Developer: Square Enix

The next iteration of the already legendary series, Final Fantasy, has been announced at yesterday’s showcase. Final Fantasy XVI will feature what seems like a more medieval setting compared to Final Fantasy XV’s modern sci-fi-ish setting, and it seems it will have the action-packed combat from Final Fantasy VII. Though story specifics are still murky at best, from what we can tell the player character is fighting for control over the mother crystal while hunting down “Dominants”. These dominants seem to be the human vessels for the summons we all know – Shiva, Titan, Phoenix- and we see in the trailer a disorienting battle between armies rallying behind Shiva and Titan. So maybe, this is a mere mortal story looking to take back control against the powers of the mother crystal? Either way, the showcase highlighted actual gameplay as well as beautiful cinematics. Let’s hope this means that the development is far along and we’ll be seeing this sometime soon.

Final Fantasy XVI will be a console exclusive to the PlayStation 5, but will be available on PC as well.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Release Date: Holiday 2020

Developer: Insomniac Games

For those of you looking forward to the continuation of the Spider-Man series, look no further. Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be coming to PS5 and PS4 this holiday season. This time Miles must save New York from a war between the energy company, Roxxon, and the Underground, lead by the Tinkerer. The gameplay shown during the showcase had Miles fighting off Underground baddies as he also saves pedestrians from an unfortunate bridge collapse. This sounds as epic as you think. Miles weaves through falling debris, holds giant sections of the bridge together, and sabotages the theft of a stolen energy source. The combat is as impactful and fun, and with the Tinkerer’s new weapons, players will face new challenges.

Call of Duty: Black Ops- Cold War

Release Date: Holiday 2020

Developer: Raven Software

Call of Duty fans got their first look at Black Ops- Cold War gameplay yesterday, and it was as exciting as you would expect. Intense executions, sharp gunplay, and, hopefully, an entertaining new campaign, Call of Duty: Black Ops- Cold War seems to have it all. Oh, wait. Did I mention the tiny controllable RC car that comes strapped with explosives? It seems Mason and Woods will use everything they can to complete their mission. Even using military toys to blow up runaway planes. This new Call of Duty game will feature the next generation of multiplayer as well as a new Nazi Zombie mode. The most exciting part of the announcement, however, was the exclusive look at the Alpha multiplayer for all PS4 owners this weekend. That’s right. PS4 owners can sign on and download the multiplayer and play all weekend long.

Resident Evil: Village

Release Date: 2021

Developer: Capcom

While it was fantastic to see Resident Evil 8 during the showcase, I hoped to see more. The trailer showcased the environment of the new game rather than highlight any new bits of the story. We saw Ethan wondering through the snow covered forest that Village is surrounded by while listening to Mia tell an old spooky story. There was no hint of what caused the new werewolf enemies or why Ethan has come to this village in the first place, but we do know that Chris Redfield is involved. Regardless of the vague and almost cryptic trailer, the hype train is in full motion. Capcom is riding on the success of Resident Evil VII and the remakes, and if those games have proven anything, it’s that Capcom knows how to deliver.

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition

Release Date: November 12, 2020

Developer: Capcom

Devil May Cry fans, rejoice! Devil May Cry 5 is coming to PlayStation 5 at launch. The special edition has the general remastering of graphics and gameplay, as well as an enhancement to the immersive 3D audio. Most exciting, however, is the three additional content that comes with the special edition. First and foremost, Capcom has included a new turbo mode. Players will be able to play at 1.2x the normal speed.  The Legendary Dark Knight difficulty has also been added. An increase of difficult enemies and faster encounters? Sounds like DMC heaven. Capcom has also introduced Virgil as a playable character.  But don’t you worry DMC fans, if you own the game on PS4, Virgil will be available as a DLC.

Deathloop

Release Date: June 2021

Developer: Arkane Studios

From the developer that brought you the Dishonored franchise, Deathloop features a 24-hour time loop, eight targets, and a rival assassin.  You play as Colt, a man who wakes up as a target of a manhunt on Blackreef. Your mission is to end the time loop on Blackreef by eliminating all eight targets before the time loop resets, and you have to start over. In true Dishonored factions, players must learn their targets’ routines and use the time loop to your advantage to take out the people who have trapped you at Blackreef.

But watch out, one of your targets is not afraid to hunt you down herself to protect the time loop. From the trailer, we can tell that players will be able to use a variety of abilities, such as the iconic teleportation we are familiar with from Dishonored, to complete the assassinations. Oddly enough, Deathloop is also a PlayStation exclusive but will be available on PC next year.

Oddworld Soulstorm

Release Date: 2020

Developer: Oddworld Inhabitants

This sidescrolling game is the next in the Oddworld series brought to you by Oddworld Inhabitants. Not sure what this game is? Think of a 2.5 sidescroller platformer that is also reminiscent of a more gruesome Pikman. You’ll play as Abe trying to free his people from Rupture Farms. Flee for your life, free your people from the slave labor they’re trapped in, and defeat Rupture Farms once and for all.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach

Release Date: Unknown

Developer: Steel Wool Studios

The next game in the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise looks as terrifying as ever. Players must survive the nights in the three-story-tall Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizza Plex. Hide for as long as you can because those animatronics are going to hunt you down. From the trailer, it seems that players will be playing Gregory, the new unfortunate night security guard perhaps? Either way, with the PlayStation 5’s capabilities Security Breach will look stunning. Though, I don’t know if you will be able to enjoy it when you’re terrified beyond reason.

Demon’s Souls

Release Date: Unknown

Developer: FromSoftware

Fans will be happy to know that FromSoftware didn’t take the easy way out and just show a beautiful trailer. That’s right. They showed actual gameplay. The player can hack and slash against difficult and dangerous enemies as they make their way to the demon bosses they must face. However, those difficult enemies look like the easiest things in the world against the boss the player had to fight in the shown gameplay. One hit, and it was all over. I guess you’ll just have to do better next time. Though this type of combat and gameplay is not for everyone, fans will be happy to know that it is as difficult as you’d expect, but also as beautiful as you’d want it to be. FromSoftware has really outdone themselves this time. Be sure to keep a lookout for the release date on this bad boy.

God of War: Ragnarok

Release Date: 2021

Developer: Santa Monica Studios

PlayStation’s wrap up was something completely unexpected. Santa Monica Studios graced us with a tiny teaser of the next God of War. It seems Ragnarok is coming. And in the words of Kratos, we must prepare ourselves.  After just three years of development, it seems we will have the next game in the God of War series and see what’s next for Atreus and Kratos.

If you’re interested in watching the entire PlayStation 5 showcase, you can find it here.
